In Loving Memory of Sylvia Ness

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Sylvia Ness, on August 16, 2025. She was 97 years old.

Born on August 8, 1928, Sylvia was the oldest of two children. Her life’s love story began early—she met her future husband, Al, as a preteen. With confidence and devotion, he told her then that one day he would marry her. They dated through high school, and while Al went off to serve in the war, their love endured. On October 19, 1947, they married and began building a life together.

Sylvia worked at a law firm in New York City before dedicating herself to raising her two children, Eileen and Larry. The family moved from Kings Highway to Mill Basin, where Sylvia created a warm and loving home. Eager to grow and learn, she returned to school in the early 1970s, earning her associate degree in 1974. She later joined the New York City school system, working there for several years.

After moving to New Jersey, Sylvia eventually retired, but she didn’t slow down. She poured her time and talents into working alongside her daughter, Eileen, and son-in-law, Norman, finding joy in being part of their work and lives.

What Sylvia cherished most, though, was her family. She was the proud matriarch of a large and loving family, survived by her children, Larry and Eileen; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She will be remembered for her laughter, her strength, her devotion to family, and her warmth that made everyone feel cared for.
